Saturday 10th September

1st Team

Home v St Benedicts, KO 3pm

This Saturday sees the return of League action to Burrows Hill. Our XV welcome St Benedicts RUFC who will be traveling down from Cumbria.

We have had a difficult start to the season with 2 tough matches .We played Lymm in the Cheshire Cup and although we acquitted ourselves well the quality of the Lymm team shone through and we can see why they play 2 leagues above us. We had a fantastic crowd on the Friday night of the game and this really lifted our boys. We hope to have your fantastic support again this Saturday

Last weekend we faced another strong team in Anselmians who have recruited well over the summer and will be one of the favourites to win our League. On the day they were too good for us although we were bitterly disappointed with our performance. We aim to put things right this weekend, but we also recognise that St Benedicts will be a very tough game. They were until recently in a league higher than park so this will not be an easy game. St Bendicts game last weekend was postponed due to a covid outbreak in their opponents De La Salle.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think this is the first time the two sides have met and we are ready to welcome them to Burrows Hill.

We have lost a few players over the summer period. They have chosen to play elsewhere to play at a higher league level. We wish them all the best and they all know they will always be welcomed back into the Winnington Park fold.

We have also gained some players over the summer. Some returning to the game, some returning from university, some moved into the area and some who have progressed from our M&J section. They have helped us having a really positive pre-season and I know you will support them when you see them play for Park. We have also added a new coach to our ranks with Garry Miller joining us and bringing some new ideas to training sessions and freshening things up for us. Garry’s history has mainly been in Rugby league, but he is a really positive addition to our club.

2nd Team

Home v Lymm, KO 3pm

Our 2nd XV face Lymm at home on Saturday. Last weekend they lost away at Oswestry but put in a good performance. The side last weekend included 7 debutants who performed admirably and gave me great confidence that these players with a bit more experience will be playing for Park for a long time and will be pushing for 1st XV places very soon. Of those 7 players we had 4 who were previous seasons colts,1 who played his first ever competitive game of rugby and 2 who were returning to rugby after a few years away(10 years in 1 case). We didn’t win but came away with a great deal of credit. We want a competitive 2nd team that is full of players who train regularly and want to play 1st team. We are not at this point yet but last weekend showed we are moving in the right direction.

3rd Team

Away v Ellesmere Port, KO 3pm

Our 3rds are away at Ellesmere Port on Saturday. Last season they were promoted after winning the league so will be facing tougher opposition this season. The aim is to be competitive in this league. We have a much stronger squad under the guidance of Tony King and we are now able to regularly filed squads in excess of 20 players. This was unheard of a couple of seasons ago and Tony should take credit in this

Last weekend they drew a hard fought game 19 – 19 against New Brighton 2nd xv. Not a bad start to the season in a higher league.

Sunday 11th September

Ladies

Home v Training

U17 Colts

Away v Stockport, KO 2pm

On Sunday the colts face Stockport in the League. It is  2PM ko at Stockport. We have a combined squad of u 18 and u 17s this season and they have some excellent players. The squad has gelled nicely over the summer, and we are expecting them to have a good season. These lads are our future, and we hope to see them playing senior rugby as soon as they are ready. Last week games V vale of Lune was postponed as they couldn’t raise a team. The pre-season friendly with Chester was also cancelled for the same reason. We have had 1 game V Aldwininas which we won comfortably but they are in a lower league than Park.  So this Sunday will be the first outing for this team
