Mens 1st Team
The re arranged fixture V Leigh planned for 7th May has been cancelled as Leigh are unable to raise a team. We are not sure yet what this means in terms of our league position. We should receive 5 points which will confirm a 4th place finish for the 1st team. Last weekend in what was the last game of the season we lost 33-17 away at 2nd place Rochdale. It has been a tough season and we are very pleased with a 4th place finish. A top 4 finish was our aim at the start of the season.
Mens 2nd Team
2nd team drew away at Lymm 42 -42 to finish 7th in the League. Results improved in the 2nd half of the season and next year we hope to seriously challenge for promotion to a higher league.
Mens 3rd Team
Our 3rd team lost against Ellesmere Port and finished 10th in the League. A difficult season in a league we were promoted into in the last season pre covid. We are unsure which league the 3rd team will be in next season but we will be stronger after the experience this season.
Womens 1st Team
Formal rugby has also finished for the Women’s section. This season has all been about forming a cohesive squad, something we have most definitely achieved. With so many brand new players to the squad and many of our more experienced players unable to play due to being pregnant, the challenge to compete in our league was omnipresent, however, our players have acquitted themselves incredibly well. Many of our fixtures have been far closer affairs than the score lines suggest. With how the squad have developed this season, with new players still getting involved and our U18 girls graduating into the senior squad next season, September offers an exciting proposition as to what we can achieve next season.
U18 Girls
The U18 Girls have so much to be proud of for this season. A packed fixture list across the season (huge thanks to the coaching and admin team that organised the season). Our players have competed in several combined teams across the last 8 months and have, to a player, shown themselves to be a formidable force in senior girls rugby. Their abilities where further recognised by a significant number of the squad being chosen to represent Cheshire Rugby, competing in a number of fixtures against Lancashire and Yorkshire.
The future of Women and Girl’s rugby looks bright at Winnington Park. We have a number of girls joining the girls section next season after playing for several years as part of our mini and junior sections at the club as well as a real swell in new players at U13 level this season.
Colts
The Colts lost the league cup final against Warrington who were a very good team. An absolutely fantastic season for our colts -League B winners, Cheshire Cup runners up and League cup runners up. All should be very proud and we look forward to seeing some of these lads in our senior teams next season.
This Saturday is the Captains dinner where we will be celebrating the achievements of the season.
After this weeekend
O2 Touch & Walking Rugby
O2 Touch rugby takes place every Thursday evening and Sunday am for those that want to keep doing a bit. Walking rugby takes place on Tuesday evenings.
Pre-Season Training
Pre season training for our senior teams will start in July.
All our players deserve a well earned rest, but we very much look forward to getting the boots back on for pre-season starting in July
The Mens teams have a “friendly” game V Cheshire Police on weds 25th May. This will be a mixed team and anyone who fancies a game can have a run out.
