Winnington Park RFC
Wilmslow RUFC

Match Report – Winnington Colts vs Wilmslow Colts. Sunday 19th Sep

Well, that was a bit different to last week. We started with a full squad of 23 players, only loosing 1 pre-match, whereas, Wilmslow only had 15.
A very much more even match, with both teams making handling errors in the rain and slippery conditions, but we started with an early try. However, we kept on giving away penalties around rucks and eventually Wilmslow got back into the game with a try and a penalty just before half time. Both sides had to cope with yellow cards and injuries, but gradually Wilmslow started to give away penalties as they tired and we pressed home the advantage to score and convert.
Wilmslow pressed hard down their right flank and pinned us down on our line for several minutes, but despite the odd off-side; the lads dug in and defended really well. This was the turning point in the match. Wilmslow eventually coughed up the ball and with a few infringements, we cleared our lines and carried the ball into their half. Another penalty in a kickable position took us to 15 – 8. In the last 5 minutes, their 15 players began to tire and we scored again on the final whistle to make the result 20 – 8.
Plenty to work on at training (especially for the coaches), but a dogged win and match time for all the players.
Highlight of the day for me was seeing 20 colts in the clubhouse having some food and drinks after the game till late in the afternoon.
