WPRFC v Keswick

27th November 2021 – Park sweep aside Keswick

WPRFC 59 – 23 Keswick

This week Park were back at home to welcome Keswick who were one place above Park in the league. Player injuries and unavailability forced another reshuffled squad with the return of Harry Stubbs and Mark Taylor into the line-up and also a debut for 18-year-old Jack England.

Park started the game with a fast pace and early pressure from our forwards gave us an early try by Alex Glendinning which was converted by the boot of Cam Flanagan. Within 10 minutes, Park capitalised on early pressure and field position with an unconverted try by Chris Twigg.

Keswick found some pace and accuracy and turned their field position into points which was unconverted to make the score 12-5 within 12 minutes. A knock on in midfield gave Park a scrum which was won and with a good run from Will Morrillo gave Park great field position with Alex Glendinning breaking tackles to score a converted try by Cam Flanagan.

Park dominated with the forwards breaking the gain line with great close play from Harry Stubbs, Ben Cann, Dave Cross and Mat Treacy. After a sustained Park attack, Mat Treacy scored an unconverted try on the 25-minute mark. Keswick worked hard in their phase play and were rewarded with a try following some miscommunication in the Park back line. Both sides struggled towards the end of the first half with too many penalties and not being able to string many phases of play together. With the penalty count rising, Park were penalised at the breakdown which Keswick converted.

Half time score 26 – 13

Park started the second half with great pace and again the forwards were breaking the gain line on every phase of play with quick recycling of the ball this resulted in a penalty to Park for a Keswick player not rolling away. The penalty was missed by Park. Park piled on the pressure, but unforced errors resulted in a scrappy period of play.

Park continued to pressure the Keswick defence and following another penalty 5 metres out, a quick tap by Alex Glendinning put Keswick on the back foot and Harry Stubbs took a great angle to score his second try from close range. Conversion by Cam Flanagan.

Debutant Jack England put in some great runs and combined well with our forwards to establish a dominant pack performance. With Park on the ascendency, Harry Stubbs went over for his second try which was converted by Cam Flanagan. Park continued to attack the Keswick line and were awarded a penalty try for a high tackle a few metres out.

With a player in the sin bin, Keswick continued to work hard in attack and were rewarded with a penalty try following a kick through and chase which Chris Twigg was judged to have tackled the player without the ball and was shown the yellow card. With less than 10 minutes left on the clock, Harry Stubbs scored his third try and cemented a great performance back in Park colours.

This was not the end of the show just yet as Ben Cann made a great break from within the Park half breaking tackles and then off loading a great pass to debutant Jack England to score the final try of the day and round off a great team performance. An impressive 9 try performance from the whole 18-man squad which puts Park third in the league and hopefully gives Matt Farr’s men confidence for the remainder of the season.
