Warrington V WPRFC 20th November 2021 – Park suffers defeat away from home

Warrington 35 – 20 WPRFC

This week Park were away at mid table Warrington hoping to build on the win last week at home. Further Park injuries forced a reshuffled squad who needed to build momentum to maintain their league position.

Warrington started strongly with early pressure forcing an early penalty as Park were judged to be offside giving Warrington an early lead from the boot. Warrington continued to pressure the Park line and from a scrum, Warrington broke on the blindside and with a few Park missed tackles Warrington scored a converted try within 5 minutes.

Park struggled to build any phases of play and could not hold on to the ball with a series of penalties at the ruck. Our scrum was also under pressure in the early part of the game which didn’t give us a platform to play off. Following an infringement by Warrington at the ruck, Park were awarded a penalty which Cam Flanagan kicked successfully.

Following a scrappy period of play with both sides conceding penalties, Park were awarded another penalty for a Warrington indiscretion at the ruck which Cam Flanagan kicked to make the score 10-6. On the 20-minute mark the Warrington scrum half and Will Nelson were sin binned for a minor altercation and with both sides down to 14 men the pressure continued on the Park line but Park stayed strong and relieved the pressure with a good clearance.

With both sides back to 15 men and a few minutes to half time, Warrington capitalised on their pressure with an unconverted try following a line out in the Park 22.

Half time score 15 – 6

The second half started with a Park mistake from a clearance kick allowing Warrington to counter with a few quick passes and scoring an unconverted try following a couple of missed tackles by Park within the first couple of minutes. Park stepped up at this point and following some great hard running from Alex Glendinning and some good phases of play with the pick and go, Park scored a try by Will Nelson which was converted by Cam Flanagan.

Park started to play some better rugby but just couldn’t convert this pressure into points. Warrington continued to capitalise on Park mistakes with a couple of penalties with only one converted by the boot for Warrington. Warrington continued to pressure park with some good running but a mistake in midfield and a clever spot by Will Nelson who scored an intercept try which was converted by Cam Flanagan.

Park struggled to gain any momentum and the missed tackles were allowing Warrington to gain field position and score two late tries to cement the win for Warrington.
