It was a cold day with a spot of rain part way through on a good wide playing pitch at Sandbach. One match, 7 a side 20mins each way. We had a strong turn out from WPRFC – Maddie, Nyah, Erin, Freya, Rebecca, Mollie with Liv from Sandbach.
The Winnington girls, this includes Liv were in good spirits but were pushed hard in the first half from a strong organised opposition scoring five tries. It was only because of some great team defensive work at our try line and some good tackling, Rebecca, Mollie and Nyah all making try saving tackles in fact all the girls stuck to the task ensuring it wasn’t a bigger score line. The game was kept alive by two Winnington tries and some good rugby thinking by Nyah clearing the line.
Even though the opposition were three up at half time both teams were equally matched and was set up nicely for a good second half.
The second half saw the tide turn with four unanswered Winnington tries making the score 6 – 5 in front. Freya – chased the ball hard from the KO, tackled the Leek player & then ripped the ball in the tackle to score in the corner. Mollie chased Nyah’s defensive kick 5 yard from our own line, beating the Leek defence to the ball, picked up & touched the ball down over the try line. Maddie scored from a determined run down the touch line. Nyah who scored 3 scored; down the line, off the K.O & when she came back on after injury.
The girls wore the opposition down attacking at every opportunity and defending well, only conceding in the last play of the game making it 6 all. A good match played in the WPRFC spirit, the girls being a credit to Winnington and Sandbach.
Player of the match: Nyah.
Most Improved player Liv (Sandbach) and Freya.
Moment of the match: The team as a whole in defence/team spirit.
