Winnington Park RFC
Anselmians RUFC

WPRFC 3rd XV vs  Anselmians 3rd XV

Park welcomed Old Anselmians to Burrows Hill on a sunny, mild December afternoon.

Missing a few regulars, most notably our "inspirational" leader Aran, on babysitting duties while his pregnant wife and parents packed up his house. Obviously they don't trust his silky handling skills with the best china.

Park started well, forwards playing a good possession game and bossing the set piece. However it was the visitors who scored first on the half hour mark, through good persistant driving. They then added a second on the stroke of half time through strong running in their centres who were a physical threat all match.

The second half started like the first, a tight arm wrestle for 20 minutes, both sides defending solidly. Finally Park got their reward for all the hard work. Gaz Williams running onto a short tap penalty, leading to Danny Armstrong crashing over for a try in his first appearance this season. 5 points in it, game on.

Sadly it wasn't to be, as the Park legs started to tire. Anselmians sealing it with a crunching break through the middle by their dangerous centre to score under the posts.  Final score 7 - 19

A great effort by all today. A few "new" (old actually) players coming into the side. Another couple of subs would have made the difference to a tired pack, but never mind the spirit was awesome.

Overall the game was a great example of 3rd team rugby, tough, attritional but played in great spirit by both teams. Have to compliment Bergy, as his reffing contributed throughout to the game. Thank you Sir!!
Good luck to Anselmians, we look forward to the return next year.

MoM - James Laverty. Great shift, awesome tackling and all while still doing ankle rehab!!

DoD - Gareth, "punted" a drop goal attempt from miles out that sailed into the trees!!! Then argued with the ref that it touched the ground!

P. S.
It looks like I've been "persuaded" to take on the captaincy. I hope I can continue the brilliant job Aran has done this season. Good luck mate, and get back soon for the odd game and lots of dirty pints.

On the pitch duties will deligate to Sergeant Major Rayner. I hope you will support us as we try to build on the great squad we have at the moment.
Tony
