Late score seals the win for Park

14/09/19- De la Salle 13 – 20 Park

Winnington Park made hard work of the victory away against De Las Salle. De La Salle were relegated from the higher league at the end of last season and this was never going to be an easy win

The Salford team had a much larger and experienced side playing against a youthful park side who had made a number of changes following last weeks victory against Bolton. Park fielded 4 of last seasons Colts team and gave a debut to Ton Hemming another player to come through the mini and junior section at Park

Park started brightly and from the Kick off put De La salle under pressure. Park were camped in the opposition 22 metre line and were rewarded with a try from Dan Williams who burst through the De La Salle defence after 5 minutes of the game. The try was converted successfully by Jack Williams

Park continued to dominate but unforced errors began to unsettle the team allowing De La Salle into the game.

On 10 minutes De La Salle converted a penalty to make the score 3-7

Park responded and took control although errors continued to allow De La Salle off the hook. Jack Williams converted 2 further penalties to make the score 3-13 and this remained the score at Half Time

Although Park were ahead the game was far from over and Park had failed to make their domination pay by making too many errors.

The second half started in the same vain. De la Salle began to assert themselves with their heavier pack winning and retaining possession and putting Park under pressure from rolling mauls from line outs. On 50 minutes a sharp break form the scrum half cut through the Park defence. The 9 fed the winger to score in the corner. De la Salle 8 – 13 and they were back in the game. The Salford tails were up and they began to dominate play. On 60 minutes De la salle scored a second try following a long kick and chase to tie the score at 13 – 13 with the conversion being missed. A tense last 20 minutes was to follow.

Park rallied and took the game to De la Salle. Errors continued and Park were unable to capitalise on their dominant play. De la salle continued to look dangerous on the break and were awarded a penalty on 70 minutes. The kick hit the post and the game remained tied. Park again responded but could not force a way through the De la Salle defence. Park had become embroiled in a forward battle which suited the larger de la salle pack. On 75 minutes Park were awarded a Penalty and this Kick also struck the post.

5 minutes to go and it became a free flowing game with both sides going for the Victory. On 78 minutes Park finally got the ball wide and began to make gaps in the de la sale defence. From a scrum Dan Williams made a break and fed winger Pugh who used his physical presence to crash over the line. The Conversion was good from Jack Williams – 13-20 to Park

Park controlled the remaining couple of minutes to earn a good victory away from home. Some great performances from our young players – Archie Sanchez a constant threat and Dan Berg making his second first team appearance had a fine second half game and is clearly got the potential to make his mark in this team. Jake Cornwell had another excellent game. Ben Cann, back from University is becoming an effective ball carrier for the team. Tom Hemming had a fine debut although , due to injury ,had to leave the pitch in the second half

Park have a young and inexperienced squad and they will have learned a lot from this performance and this game. Coach Farr said” A very satisfying victory when we were perhaps not at our best due to the number of changes made and all credit to De La Salle who never gave up and made it a difficult game. Our young players were outstanding and these players and the club have a very bright future”.
